Back to School Encouragement

Back to School Encouragement

Back To School

Sometimes going back to school can be difficult, overwhelming, or just plain scary for kids. They may be having problems socially, or be worried academically. Either way, a little encouragement can go a long way. The following are a few fun ideas for encouraging and supporting your student.

Lunch box notes: It can be tough to make it through a school day, and sometimes by lunch kids are ready to throw in the towel, which is why this is such a great encouragement option for kids. What you do is when you pack their school lunch in the morning, simply write a couple of lines on the napkin you enclose, and stick a little treat in with it. Something they do not get often, or would not be expecting. A few words like, “I hope your day at school is wonderful.” Or “I was thinking about you and I love you.” Can really help turn a day around for a child.

Fun surprises in the backpack: If you want a fun encouragement, surprises are a good idea. One way to do this is by slipping something into their backpack for them to find at school. Be sure you include a note or something so that they know it is for them. You can put a treat in their backpack, or maybe a fun pencil, notebook, etc. with their favorite characters on it. Just something to make them excited and perk up their spirits about being in school. You know your child, so figure out what kind of surprise in their backpack would give them the most encouragement for the day. It might be a card telling them how proud you are and tickets to a movie for the weekend, etc.

Clear your schedule: Sometimes the best encouragement you can give a child going to school is time spent with you. If they do not have to worry that they will get less attention from you, they will be more excited to go back to school. So, clear your schedule that first week they go in order to be there to listen and help them with anything they may need. They might need homework help, someone to listen to them, or just to know that you will be there, read with them, and find time for them after their schedules get busier.

If your child needs some returning to school encouragement, start by considering what it is that makes them tick, and find ways to tap into that and provide them with the extra boost of motivation that they need. For most kids, a note, an encouraging word, a few surprises and some of your time will do the trick better than anything else in the world, but you know your child best.

Choosing a School

Choosing a School

Choosing a School

Choosing a secondary school is an important step in life. Getting it right or wrong can make a big difference. Part of the equation is you choosing a school to apply to and the other part is the school deciding whether or not to accept or reject the application.

You will probably be choosing schools on the basis of their location, reputation and specialisms. Obviously if there are any special needs or religious requirements, this will be of huge importance too. Whether the school is a boarding school, single-sex or mixed is likely to also be of importance to many.

Hopefully you have started you research early because the best schools are hard to get in to and places fill up fast.

When you settle on a short-list of schools, it’s time to check them out in detail. Ask around to see what their reputation is, look at the exam results, read the Ofsted reports and look at the website.

You should also go and see the schools. See what they are like at going-home time and how the pupils are behaving. Also visit the school by appointment or on an open day. Plan a few questions before you go. When you go to the school, there are a few things to pay attention to that will help you. See how the teachers interact with pupils, look at the work on display on the walls and the trophies won by the school and see what the toilets and food facilities are like. See what condition the buildings are in and whether everyone generally looks happy. Make sure that teachers interact with both parents and pupils on the tour and make sure that you ask some current pupils how they feel about the school. The school will put up the best behaved and most gifted pupils to show you around, but make sure you talk to a few other pupils too.

Find out what sports, technology, language, music and drama facilities the school has and what extra curricular clubs are available. This helps get a feel for overall school life and is useful if you are after a school with a particular specialism in this field. Remember that very academic environments don’t suit everyone. You will also want to find out how many pupils leave the school to go to further education.

You don’t have to make a decision based on just one visit. If you need to see more, go back again.

Whatever secondary school you choose, you should find somewhere where you can be happy and thrive, and make the most of all your opportunities.

Top 4 Reasons to Homeschool in High School

Top 4 Reasons to Homeschool in High School

SCHOOL

Many non-homeschoolers can go along with the idea of homeschooling in elementary school, and perhaps even in middle school, although the eyebrows begin to rise at that point. However, to the non-homeschooler, why anyone would homeschool in the high school years is beyond understanding. To many, this seems absurd. Yet to the veterans, there are many reasons to continue homeschooling, or to begin, during these years. Here are the top four reasons that come up every time homeschoolers are asked about their decision.

School

1. Flexibility – The specifics may vary, but some element of flexibility ranks as the highest reason for homeschooling during the high school years. That could mean the family travels, runs a business, or participates in competitive sports. Or, perhaps the largest factor of flexibility is the desire to select their own uniquely suited curricula. Whatever the specific case may be, homeschooling allows for more flexibility on every level of life for this aged student.

2. Training in Life Skills – While similar to flexibility, this reason for homeschooling comes up again and again for families who have more than just academics on their mind. Many homeschoolers realize that the final opportunity they will have to prepare their children to live as adults is during high school. For this reason, many say that their choice to homeschool during this time goes beyond flexibility and moves into training of the whole child – training to prepare the child to live independently in ways that mechanized public school systems just cannot do.

3. Learning Skills Preparation – Many homeschoolers will also tell you that a primary reason that they chose to homeschool this long is because their child needed additional strategies for learning that they were not going to get in their local public school. The high school years provide a final chance to teach students how to learn, not just what to learn, and this skill is not stressed enough in the schools according to these homeschool families.

4. Accelerated Learning – The opportunity to accelerate a student’s learning, such that they can complete college courses from home at an earlier age, is another widely cited reason for homeschooling in high school. Not only does this give the student an incredible opportunity to grow in their knowledge beyond the average high school textbook, but it also allows the family to start the college process at reduced costs, which saves thousands of dollars over the course of the student’s college years. No room and board, beyond what is already being spent, is necessary, and students can gain incredible course opportunities this way, too.

There are other common reasons, but these four dominate the most frequently cited benefits to homeschooling in high school. There is no shortage of curricula or resources to homeschool efficiently in high school, and therefore, many more families are extending their homeschool programs into the latter years.

After School Activities

After School Activities – What is Best?

school

What is best for your child in today’s world? Both parents work, we all are not wealthy so what choices do we have? We have to consider who is watching them; do we know them? I think we have to be more careful at what program we decide on. I believe that safety and keeping our children happy is very important.

For millions of parents around the world when the bell rings their day does not end. What I mean by that is we cannot leave our jobs to come home and welcome our children at the door. So, we as parents need to find some activity for our children to participate in to keep them happy and safe. When kids are finished with school they need activities to keep their minds and bodies busy. If you are wealthy you sign them up in dance, sports or maybe a music program but, what about the families that are not privileged? Do they go home to be latch key kids, or sit in front of the TV or video game. We need to get them involved in an after school program that can be run by the school or some other community organization. It is important for the kids involved that we make sure our government keeps these programs alive. In these after school programs kids can get tutored or help with there homework. Do other activities like painting, music or games. These activities are good for the growth of our children and makes them feel good and important. Some communities have sports programs that are free or very affordable. As parents we need to find out what interests your child has to help you decide what program will work best for them. It doesn’t make any sense to sign them up for something just because you think its good. Besides your child will not get anything out of it and you will end up disappointed.

After school activities can thrive only if backed by sufficient parental involvement as well. What is a football or soccer game be without any parents to cheer on their little heroes. I can not stress this note enough nothing is as great when your child looks in the stands or on the sidelines and sees their Mom or Dad there cheering them on. Now make sure not to put your children in too many activities either for, they still need time to just be kids too. A little free time every day to play with there friends or watch there favorite show is a good thing. Your child may not become the next wonder-kid but, let them cultivate an interest that they enjoy. Remember, happiness and fulfillment is all that matters.

What do you have when you combine healthy exercise with hands-on street proofing lessons and reduced air pollution emissions?

A Walking School Bus!

A Walking (or Cycling) School Bus is two or more families, traveling together for safety.

“The Walking School Bus is a great way to help reduce traffic congestion around our schools, making our communities safer for everyone.”
Toronto Police Service, School Liaison Officer involved with the Active & Safe Routes to School program.

You may be surprised to learn that 9 out of 10 parents who walk their children to school use it as an ideal way to meet new people, socialize at the school gate and get some daily exercise, concludes a study by the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) in the UK, in May 2002. Should Students Have To Wear School Uniforms?

Should Students Have To Wear School Uniforms?

school children

The great debate continues about should students have to wear school uniforms? There is no definitive answer as it entirely depends upon the persons beliefs. There are benefits for some children who wear uniforms and disadvantages to others.

The main reason schools in America choose not to allow their students to wear their own clothes is because of the gangs. Having a uniform stops gang members from displaying their colours and garb. The schools also believe it helps stop violence and helps instill a sense of pride in the students. It also helps to break down the barriers between different socioeconomic groups.

Below are some opinions taken from a messageboard regarding the issue:

“I feel we should keep to the uniform. It sets an example of the school. It is representation the community. It is easy to point out different people. Also there would be more fights/bullly’s due to the lack of ‘fashion’. ”

” Many schools throughout the U.S. force students grades kindergarten through twelfth to wear uniforms. Students who attend public schools should not have to wear uniforms for four reasons.

1. School uniforms inhibit studentsEUR(TM) individuality. Young people often express their feelings through the clothing that they wear. Uniforms will take away this form of expression. Why should school districts try to make everyone look the same?

2. A school uniform policy inhibits a student’s freedom of choice. Schools teach students that our country is a free one. But when school boards make students wear what they tell them too– it curtails the students’ freedom.

3. There is the issue of cost. Many parents shop for their children’s clothes at used and discount stores. Uniforms can cost more money than these families might be able to afford. Also, these students would need to buy additional clothing to wear after school and on the weekends. That’s double the amount of money a family would spend than they would without the uniforms.

4. The last reason I do not enjoy the thought of school uniforms is comfort. Students enjoy wearing comfortable clothing to school. Uniforms are not necessarily comfortable. Also, wearing a uniform might make the student uncomfortable around people outside the school who don’t have to wear a uniform.

If we want individuality, freedom, and comfort for students while keeping costs down for families, we should not have a school uniform policy for students who attend public schools. ”

” In my opinion, right up to year 11 students/kids should have to wear school uniform, it stops all the arguments about who has the latest fashions etc.

But when you reach college or 6th form it should stop, because by then your old enough to know not to take the pee out of what people wear. Mind you saying that, most of the people at my 6th form were wallys. ”
